5月19日周三:一起打电话救救加州数学教程

众所周知,加州的数学教育水平非常低,2019年的一项调查显示,只有45%的K-12学生达到或者超过教材规定所需的标准。而PPIC最新发布的研究报告显示,提高对数学课程的要求会提高孩子的整体学习表现。

然而,在有如此科学数据支持以及common sense的情况下,加州的教材制定部门Instructional Quality Commissions (IQC)居然草拟了一个要降低K-12数学标准的新教学框架

IQC将于明天(5/19日)就此数学新教学框架组织一个公众听证会(public hearing)。这个新教学框架紧跟很有争议的民族学教育框架,把政治融入到数学教育中,要在数学教育中搞种族斗争、批斗白人至上主义,提出要追求所谓的“平等(equity)”。此外,该教学框架还包括了一个非常危险的反智(anti-merit)的内容,就是建议慢慢删除提供给数学能力较强的孩子的快班教学(proposing eliminating or phasing out multiple advanced tracks and ability grouping)。CFER顾问、前教育部副部长 Dr. Willamson M. Evers说,“这个教材(如果通过)会给天才班项目钉上最后一块棺材板,导致加州在数学上有天分的孩子举步维艰。” 换句话说,这个新教学框架对于那些家庭经济不好而又有能力在数学方面取得优异成绩的学生将尤为不利。

Suggested Talking Points:

  • California’s Draft Math Framework is a giant step backwards to unlawful racial discrimination and anti-merit indoctrination. It submerges excellence and opportunities under political activism.
  • Don’t subject our deserving and hardworking students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to unscientific and biased math training.
  • California students, grades K through 12, deserve balanced, rigorous and objective math education. Don’t turn math into an ideological battleground.
  • Talented students from poorer backgrounds don’t have resources to walk away from public education. But they are entitled to a quality math education that meet their academic needs and match their individual capabilities.
  • Higher math requirements, according to reputable research, lead to better student outcomes. Lowering math standards is irresponsible to our students. especially those from poorer backgrounds.
